Aravalli, literally “a line of peaks” is one of the oldest mountain ranges in western India. It spreads over 692 sq kms, running in north-westerly direction covering the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The northern part of Aravali, in Delhi and Haryana, has isolated hills and rocky-ridges. Within its vast flora and fauna, it also has numerous species of medicinal plants. A vast part of Aravali exhibits the typical semi-dry deciduous forest. The Aravalli range plays a significant role in checking the southward expansion of Thar desert as well as arresting the rapidly decling eco-levels of the Delhi-NCR region. Unfortunately, being endowed with a wide variety of minerals, has resulted in illegal mining in the area for many years now.
